Announcements:  

  • Charles, Bill and Ken will be participating in a “Be the Change” class at Needham High School.  The class of 48 students will learn more about Rotary and community service, with the hope of getting more Needham students interested and participating in a high school Rotary chapter
  • Needham High School Seniors will begin coming to lunch
  • Chris Teachout, Jim Brown and Holly Brown ran as Team Rotary in the Charles River Center 5K.  CONGRATUALTIONS!
  • We will be inducting Brenda Diaz next week
  • Looking for STORAGE SPACE for all the Rotary gear.  We are losing our space at Jim Brown’s place and need to find a new location by November.
  • Pancake Breakfast date is set for November 3 at the Needham High School.  Glen reminded the group that placemat ads are being finalized this week and he will be sending out an activity sheet for people to sign up to help with set up, serving and clean up
  • Glen stated that Rotary speakers are booked through December!  Great job Glen.  If you have interested and interesting speakers, please contact Glen for January slots.
  • October 6 – Rotary Leadership Institute meeting in Boxboro.  The Chapter pays for those that wish to attend
  • October 6 – Harvest Fair- Jim Brown is looking for volunteers to man the table and hopefully sell pancake breakfast tickets

NYS has many programs to work with Needham youth.  John provided some statistics indicating that drug and alcohol abuse is found among Needham youth in the same ratio as other surrounding towns.  Needham Youth Services provides:

    • Suicide Prevention programs- two upcoming, FREE classes for those that would like to learn more about recognizing the signs- November 27, 2012 and March 15, 2013 from 7-9 PM
    • At Risk Behavior Programs to combat Drug and Alcohol abuse
    • Mind, Body, Spirit Program targeting pre-teen girls
    • Mental Health Services
    • Project Van
    • Peer Tutoring
    • Patrick C. Forde Good Person Memorial Award- Nominations are due by November 1
