**Rotary Club of Needham**
October 9, 2012
Location: Needham Sheraton

President Charles led us in the Pledge of Allegiance; we sang God Bless America, with Dan Tibma leading us, and the invocation was delivered by Rev. Darrell.

Announcements:

  • Pancake Breakfast date is set for November 3 at the Needham High School. Be there! Tickets and flyers next week.
  • Darrell will be in China enjoying Chinese Pancakes when our Pancake Breakfast will be held. He is trying to get things put in place now, promising his wife’s best breakfast buns if you contact him and become part of the committee! Bribery, works all the time! Last year we served 103 dinners at the Masonic Hall and delivered 100 meals to individual homes. Looking for volunteers!
  • Ken Bill Rosenthal and Charles visited the student leaders group (called ‘Be The Change’)  at NHS to explain Rotary. The students wanted to know more about the UN Day  held at the UN by Rotary; there was interest in establishing an Interact Club; and a female senior is going to Kenya next year and wants to know of Rotary possibilities over there. Very successful meeting! Two of the students had been to the RYLA program through Needham Rotary. This will lead to NHS seniors coming to visit Rotary on a regular basis.
  • Bill Paulson is arranging to put name plates in the dictionaries next week for each 3rd grade student. We pass these out at all the elementary schools, with a name plate for each student inside.
  • Bob Cocks and Charles attended the RLI information meeting last Saturday in Boxboro. I trust they both smarter about Rotary!

Guests:

  • Mark Rosen, Framingham Rotarian and Past District Treasurer
  • John Perry and Ashley from Needham Hometown Weekly, our guest speakers.

Guest Speaker. : Josh Perry, Editor of Needham Home Town weekly discussed how the ‘Home Town Weekly’ newspapers include 6 towns: Needham, Westwood, Dover/Sherborn, Medfield and Walpole. They attempt to gather and publish news that might otherwise fall between the cracks at other newspapers.

Hometown Weekly has been in business for 15 years, and it has been publishing a Needham edition for 7 years.

Josh has been an editor or several of these newspapers, and lives in Attleboro. He graduated from RI College in 2001 and the Conn. School of Broadcasting in 2004.

They have been very accommodating with the Rotary Club about publishing information pertinent to Rotary. These newspapers are all delivered every Thursday into every home. They do not mail them, hoping to get more readership that way.
