Let the Music Flow in Needham!

The wonderful sounds of music in Needham surrounded us at our meeting of March 3rd as we welcomed the winners of the Rotary Music Competition held in January of 2015 at Powers Concert Hall in Needham!  The Needham High School male a capella group, The Subway Dwarfs, and twelve year old singer and keyboardist, Mackenzie Clement, serenaded us.  Our weekly singing of "America the Beautiful" and our "Welcome Song" for guests has NEVER sounded so melodious!

As winners of our Music Competition, The Subway Dwarfs and Mackenzie Clement, each received a cash prize presented by Rachel, Greg and Bill, and were treated to a great luncheon at the Sheraton.  We also got to hear a little about the future plans of the graduating senior singers from Needham High School.

Mackenzie was joined by her father, who is also her manager, photographer and sound technician!   As a bonus, Needham Rotarian Bob Dunning, who is a life-long friend of Mackenzie's family, enthusiastically joined in the music and celebration!  Thanks to Greg, Rachel and Bill for their leadership in the Music Competition Program!

Bill also presented a check to Ms. Kate Findlen of the Needham "Friends of Music" to help support music education and performance programs at Needham High School.

  • If you do not have a badge, reach out to Marty and he will get one ordered.
  • Ryan and his wife, Kistra are the proud parents of a baby girl born on Ryan’s birthday last Thursday!  Happy birthday Ryan and the new arrival!!
  • NEF pancake breakfast is Saturday, March 14th. Needham Rotary is providing the expertise, manpower and griddles to prepare the high quality pancakes necessary for the fundraising event.  We are still looking for volunteers to help man the griddles at 7-11 am!  Rotary shares 50-50 in the net profits!
  • Tentative date of March 31st for the daffodil delivery to the Needham nursing homes.
  • The Needham Robotics team will be visiting with us on April 28th.
  • The brand new Edward M. Kennedy Institute will be opening to the public on March 30.  We have been invited to a pre-opening ‘live rehearsal” on Saturday, March 7th between 10-2.
  • Karen Wetmore is coordinating the Group Study Exchange (GSE) with Rotarians from Italy.  More details to follow regarding biographies and agenda.  We need two more host families for May 12-13th!

50/50: Lucky Bob Cocks had the right number to draw from the new deck.  Brand new pot after Marty pulled the right number from the remaining four cards last week.  The pot will continue to grow past a few dollars as Bob did not pull the winner.

Happy Dollars:

There were many happy dollars to welcome our talented guests from the Music Awards.  Ted was happy to welcome grandson, Luke born Saturday!  Happy to see Erica Bond and Bob Dunning.

Rich gave Libby a special thank you for her work and that of her colleagues at Capron Lighting in Needham <http://capron.net/index.html>!   Without them, our Music Competition Concert couldn't have been so beautifully and professionally produced and presented to our community!   Also, keep Libby in your thoughts and prayers as she is undergoing shoulder surgery this week and faces many weeks of rehabilitation which will take her away from us indefinitely.

Finally, give a shout out to our President Glen and the Board of Directors who met this past week to manage our club's business, planning and financial resources!   Thanks folks for your hard work!  (Not pictured:  Ryan, Charles and Marty).
